Hawks win season opener over Newman, 5-0

Senior forward Nick McDonald scored the first goal of the 2013 season.
Box Score The sixth-ranked Rockhurst Hawks posted a 5-0 win over Newman in their season opener Friday night at RU's Bourke Field. Rockhurst jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead and coasted in the second half.

Freshman forward Mitchell Moncada led the Hawks with two goals off the bench. His first goal came on a breakaway from 15 yards out late in the first half. He gave Rockhurst a 4-0 lead with a shot from 18 yards out in the 65th minute.

Senior forward Nick McDonald opened the scoring in the 27th minute with an assist from Nick Caruso. A header off a corner kick by senior defender Jon Schreiber made in 2-0 in the 40th minute. Junior forward Keith Williams capped the scoring with a penalty kick at the 84:42 mark. Senior keeper Ryan Bass made two saves and assisted on Monchada's second goal.

The Hawks, 1-0, host Northeastern State (Okla.) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
