Rockhurst survives weather delays to edge William Jewell

Box Score Paolo Scoppola tallied the game-winning goal in the 70th minute to give Rockhurst to a 2-1 victory over William Jewell Wednesday night at RU's Bourke Field.

The start of the game was delayed by nearly two hours due to heavy thunderstorms in the Kansas City area. There was also a 30-minute weather delay late in the first half.

The Hawks, 12-3-2 overall, finished fourth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with an 11-2-2 league record. Rockhurst will host fifth-seeded Missouri-St. Louis in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Scoppola scored his first goal of the season on a shot from 12 yards into the upper 90s, assisted by Sean Verbanic and Paul Dean. Nick McDonald gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute on a shot from 14 yards into the upper left corner. The goal came off a shot by Jake Grimes that rebounded off the Jewell keeper.

Scoppola and Mark Magee led the Hawks with six shots apiece. Verbanic added four shots. Senior keeper Ryan Bass made one save.
