No. 5 Rogers State scored four unanswered goals to pull away from previously ranked Rockhurst in a 5-1 victory Wednesday (Sept. 2) night at Bourke Field.
The Hawks came out with strong momentum in the opening 20 minutes, but Rogers State turned the match in its favor late in the first half. Rockhurst's Riccardo Legnante converted a penalty kick in the fourth minute to put the Hawks in front, but the Hillcats responded with three goals over the final 15 minutes of the first half to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
Rogers State added two goals in the opening two minutes of the second half to extend its advantage to 5-1. Harkaran Sahota scored in the 31st minute, followed by Gian Filizzola in the 35th minute and Alex Laing on a penalty kick in the 42nd minute. Ashton Medina scored in the 46th minute before Laing added his second goal of the night in the 47th minute.
Rockhurst finished with 11 shots and eight corner kicks, including seven corners in the second half.
The Hawks fall to 1-2 on the season, while Rogers State improves to 3-0.
Rockhurst returns to Bourke Field Saturday (Sept. 5)Â for its home opener and the start of Great Lakes Valley Conference play, hosting Indianapolis at 7 p.m.
