Rockhurst men's soccer battled Lewis to a scoreless draw Saturday (Sept. 12) afternoon at Lewis Stadium, as the Hawks earned a point on the road in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) action.
The Hawks controlled much of the offensive action throughout the match, finishing with a 12-3 advantage in shots and putting five attempts on goal. Rockhurst also earned seven corner kicks while holding Lewis without a corner opportunity.
Freshman goalkeeper Luke Strueby recorded his second shutout of the season, making one save across 90 minutes. The freshman goalkeeper continues to make an impact early in his first collegiate season, helping the Hawks keep Lewis off the scoreboard.
Rockhurst created several opportunities throughout the afternoon, including five shots from forward Blake Barrick. Barrick put three of his attempts on target, but Lewis goalkeeper Matija Blazic turned aside each opportunity.
The Hawks generated their first strong chances in the opening half, with Troy Lor forcing a save in the 18th minute and Rockhurst continuing to pressure the Lewis defense with multiple corner kicks. Rockhurst finished the opening 45 minutes with five shots compared to none for Lewis.
The Hawks continued to apply pressure after halftime. Barrick put two more shots on goal early in the second half, while Rhys Laws also forced a save in the 60th minute. Rockhurst continued to push for the breakthrough late in the match, earning another corner in the 78th minute and seeing Elijah Riese and Cameron Ayoade each record shots in the final 13 minutes.
Rockhurst moves to 2-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in GLVC play following the draw. The Hawks return home for their next conference matchup.
