Women capture GLVC West Division title

The Rockhurst women's tennis team defeated Drury, 7-0, Saturday at the Plaza Tennis Center to clinch the GLVC West Division championship.

The Hawks (14-5, 5-0 GLVC) will play on Saturday at 9 a.m. against a team to be determined in the semifinals of the GLVC Women's Tennis Tournament in Springfield, Illinois.

Ella Coleman, who is ranked 20th in Division II, won her No. 1 singles match in two sets over 46th-ranked Ewa Samberger. Coleman and Zuzanna Szmyd, who are ranked No. 40, captured No. 1 doubles, 6-0, over Drury's 23rd-ranked doubles team.

Szmyd and Maria Baez won their singles matches in three sets. Sofia Valdespino, Marina Magai and Dani Lentisco won in straight sets in singles.

On Friday, the Hawks posted a 6-1 victory over Southwest Baptist at the Plaza Tennis Center. It was the Rockhurst women's first NCAA-era win over the Bearcats.

The Hawks swept all three doubles matches by a combined score of 18-4. Rockhurst won five of the six singles matches in two sets. Ella Coleman fell in two sets in No. 1 singles.
