Softball posts 3-2 victory over Northwest Missouri

A game-winning two-run home run by McKenna Lester gave Rockhurst a 3-2 win over Northwest Missouri State in the first game of a Tuesday doubleheader at the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kansas. In the second game, the Hawks fell 9-7 to Emporia State.

Northwest Missouri State used a two-run double to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. In the bottom of the third, Kaylee Pugh cut the Bearcat lead in half by scoring on a wild pitch. Kerstyn Finch scored on the Lester two-run home run.

Jayla Pierce collected two hits, including a double. Claire Tipton also recorded a hit.

Madeline McCall (1-2) recorded her first win of the season and her first as a Hawk. McCall allowed two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts, collecting her second straight complete game.

Emporia State 9, Rockhurst 7
The Hornets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second after hitting a three-run home run, scoring on a wild pitch and recording an RBI single. Emporia State added two in the top of the third with an infield single and after reaching base on an error.

Rockhurst answered with four in the bottom of the third, beginning with RBI singles by Lester and Tipton. Lily Hance added a run, which was followed by a Mya Bristow RBI double.

The Hawks scored two in the bottom of the fourth with a Lester two-run single and in the bottom of the fifth, Pierce's first home run of the season tied the game at 7-7.

A two-single by Emporia State in the bottom of the sixth gave the Hornets a 9-7 lead.

Lester and Pierce each recorded three hits. Tipton had two hits, as Jazmyne Moreno, Mya Bristow and Eva Fulk each tallied a hit.

Fulk, Finch, Emily Berry and Moreno all collected a stolen base.

Avery Huffman allowed four earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched. Riley Braden (0-1) pitched 4.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
