Hawks drop pair of extra-inning games in Topeka

Rockhurst Softball fell to Newman and Fort Hays State in extra innings at the Washburn Invitational on Sunday in Topeka, Kansas. The Hawks fell 4-3 to Newman in 11 innings and lost to Fort Hays State, 3-2, in nine innings.

A game-winning RBI single gave Newman a 4-3 win over Rockhurst in 11 innings. 

The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third with RBI singles by Kerstyn Finch and Emily Berry. Newman responded with three runs in the bottom of the third after a bases-loaded walk and an error. Rockhurst tied the game at three in the top of the fourth after a Kaylee Pugh RBI single.

Finch and Pugh each recorded two hits to lead the Hawks. Finch also posted a double, Pugh and Claire Tipton each stole a base. Eva Fulk added a triple.

Avery Huffman (0-2) allowed two earned runs on eight hits in 10 innings and struck out 11.

Fort Hays State 3, Rockhurst 2 (nine inn.)
Fort Hays State hit two RBI singles in the bottom of the ninth to overcome a 2-1 deficit.

Rockhurst took a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth on a Finch RBI single. Fort Hays State scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game 1-1. A Tipton RBI double gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth.

Tipton led the Hawks with three hits. Finch collected two hits and a stolen base. McKenna Lester had a hit and a walk.

Madeline McCall (0-2) allowed two earned runs on five hits in 8.2 innings with eight strikeouts.

Rockhurst (0-4) faces Northwest Missouri State at 2 p.m. Tuesday followed by a game against Emporia State at 4 p.m. in Topeka.
