Rockhurst began the 2024 season with a 3-0 win over Emporia State on Thursday night at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse in the Kansas City Classic.
The Hawks overcame two five-point deficits to win their first two sets of the night. Rockhurst began the match down 6-1 but rallied to win the first set 25-18. In the second set, the Hawks were down 23-18 and won 26-24. They pulled away in the third set to win the match with a 25-13 victory.
Head coach Trent Jones was pleased about the team's perseverance.
"I was really happy with the way we fought and the maturity we showed tonight,"Â Jones said. "Despite being down by five points in sets one and two, we kept fighting and still won both sets."
Tera Reberry led the Hawks with 12 kills and four blocks. Maureen Reilly added 14 digs and three service aces. Kenzie Hines had 12 assists and 11 kills, while Sarah Montague added 12 digs and 19 assists. Molly Trachta finished with 10 assists of her own.
Rockhurst ended up with 56 digs, 38 kills and 38 assists.
Up next, Rockhurst faces Winona State on Friday at 2 p.m. at Mason-Halpin Field House.
