Campion, McConnell receive major GLVC awards

Jonah McConnell is the first Rockhurst player to earn Freshman of the Year honors
Senior Matt Campion and freshman Jonah McConnell earned major postseason honors for the 2024 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Lacrosse season, the league office announced on Thursday.

Campion and McConnell were two of nine Rockhurst players to receive All-GLVC honors. Campion earned All-GLVC First Team honors while being named the GLVC Defensive Player of the Year. McConnell, a second team All-GLVC honoree, was named the Co-Freshman of the Year in the GLVC.

This marks Rockhurst's first Defensive Player of the Year accolade and third major award for the program after Zach Bodeau was the Specialty Player of the Year in 2019 and Kevin Kelley was Tri-Coach of the Year in 2023

Campion recorded 42 ground balls in 14 games and 16 in six GLVC-only contests with 18 caused turnovers overall and six in league matches. Campion finished in the top 10 in the league for overall caused turnovers (18) and caused turnovers per game.

McConnell claims the first-ever Freshman of the Year honor for Rockhurst and fourth major award for the program. He ranked sixth in the league overall for points per game and goals per game. McConnell placed third in points per game in GLVC-only games, along with finishing fifth in goals per game.

Joining McConnell on the All-GLVC Second Team were senior midfielder Ricky Bloom, graduate student midfielder Alec Heflin, and junior defender Matthew Kallberg.

Four Hawks nabbed honorable mention honors: freshman attacker Linus Toward, sophomore faceoff/midfielder Carson Bradshaw, sophomore short-stick midfielder Avery Moody and sophomore goalie Brock Ollila.

Nate Adamson was Rockhurst's nominee for the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award.

The Hawks (10-4) play 12th-ranked Maryville in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament today at 7 p.m. at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois.
