Defense will lead Hawks heading into season opener

The Hawks are the reigning GLVC Tournament champions
The Rockhurst men's lacrosse team begins its 11th season this weekend in Florida. The Hawks open up at fourth-ranked Tampa University tonight and then face Saint Leo University on Sunday afternoon.

Head coach Kevin Kelley returns the bulk of his defense and a solid corps of his offense. The Hawks return four All-Conference honorees: senior defender Luke Leonard, senior midfielder Alec Heflin, senior midfielder Matt Campion and sophomore midfielder Lars Yarkosky.

"Our biggest strength is our defense. Luke Leonard and Matthew Kallberg are great leaders. We have a good base of defenders. They are a sound unit," said Kelley, who has led the Hawks to 88 wins in their first 10 seasons.

The Hawks also feature three talented short stick midfielders in Avery Moody, Preston Borchardt and Campion. Campion, Leonard and Kallberg combined for 44 caused turnovers and 97 ground balls last year.

"We are young on offense. It's a group that will continue to grow and find their groove. We have a lot of talent on offense," Kelley said. "We have three strong players who will handle our faceoffs in Carson Bradshaw, Drew Altic and Oren Lautenbach."

Yarkosky and Ricky Bloom both scored 18 goals and 24 points last year. Heflin, Tyler Smith and Jack Vande Ven combined for 35 goals and 47 points last year. Parker Jones and Nate Adamson round out the midfield attack.

Sophomore Brock Ollila will take over duties in goal for Hayden Harris. Ollila made one start last year, making 21 saves in a 9-8 overtime win at Maryville.

The Hawks are picked to finish in a tie for third with Indianapolis in the GLVC Coaches' Preseason Poll behind Lewis and Maryville. Rockhurst close the regular season at home against Maryville and at Lewis.
