Strong trio leads Hawks heading into 2024-25 season

The Rockhurst women's basketball team tips off the 2024-25 season with a ton of optimism heading into tonight's opener against the Benedictine Ravens at Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Hawks, who return three starters from a 15-12 team, are picked to finish sixth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference preseason coaches' poll.

"I think other teams in our league have respect for us and know that we are a quality team," said head coach Larry Park. "Our kids have a goal of winning 18 games and winning a (GLVC) playoff game."

Keegan Sullivan returns for her fifth season at Rockhurst.  The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 14.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game last year. The All-GLVC second team honoree ranks 11th in career scoring at Rockhurst with 1,123 points.

"I think Keegan has really improved," Park said. "She is good at everything. She is a tremendous rebounder and is a really good passer. The whole league will tell you that Keegan is one of the best players in the league.

"In practice, she has made effort plays that are extremely impressive. Keegan has guard skills and thinks like a guard. She is very efficient."

Junior guard Macie Conway will fill the off-guard role for the third straight year. She averaged 12.4 points and made a team-high 42 three-pointers last year.

"Macie has made herself a better player. She is extremely energetic. She has really improved defensively," said Park.

Senior center Rebeca Garcia gives the Hawks an experienced and dependable inside player, who averaged 6.5 points and 4.8 rebounds last season.

"Rebeca will play more minutes this year," Park said. "She is the best help defender we've had since I've been here. She does a good job of protecting the lane."

Sophomore Aubrey Treadwell will replace Allison McFarren as the starting point guard. Graduate student Akili Felici rounds out the starting lineup as a wing player. The backcourt will be deep with sophomore transfer Averi Porter, sophomore Ella Campbell, senior Brooke Ellis and freshman Sadie Conway.

Coach Park also believes his frontcourt will be stronger with returnees Alivia McCulla and Clare Diener to go along with junior transfer Chloe Frank and freshman Lauen Sandstrom.

"We should be stronger inside," Park said. "Chloe Frank is a good perimeter shooter. Clare Diener is going to be fine after sitting out last year with a knee injury."

Park would like to see the Hawks shoot over 35 percent from behind the 3-point line after shooting 29.8 percent last year. He also wants to improve on the boards after being outrebounded by five rebounds per game last season.

The Hawks will play a 20-game conference schedule this year, beginning Nov. 30 at Truman State.
