Hawks impress SLU coach in exhibition opener

Jaylen Wesley posted eight points and eight rebounds
Rockhurst got off to an impressive start before falling to Saint Louis, 86-65, Friday night in a men's basketball exhibition game at SLU's Chaifetz Arena.

The Hawks led for nearly 18 minutes in the first half before taking a 33-30 lead into halftime. Daniel Carr and Brian Hawthorne combined for 19 points and six steals in the first 20 minutes.

Saint Louis opened the second half on a big run to take a 56-39 lead. The Billikens shot 64.3 percent in the final 20 minutes.

"Credit to Rockhurst, thought they did a nice job. Super scrappy, competed…were the better team in the first half," said SLU coach Josh Schertz. "I think tonight was good for us. Competition is a mirror, it reflects what you are as a team."

Carr led the Hawks with 14 points on six-of-12 shooting from the field and eight rebounds. Hawthorne finished with 12 points and six steals. Jaylen Wesley posted eight points and eight rebounds. Jesse White added eight points.

Rockhurst jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two minutes and led by eight, 24-16, with 7:26 left in the first half after White made three free throws. The Hawks scored 11 points off turnovers and 18 points in the first half.

The Hawks open the regular season on Nov. 8 against Davenport in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
