Women’s Volleyball opens season at home tonight

The Hawks posted a 20-8 record in 2022.
Women's volleyball coach Trent Jones returns the bulk of his squad heading into the Hawks' season opener at home against Sioux Falls (S.D.) tonight (6 p.m.) in the Kansas City Classic.

"We are a veteran group for the most part. We have added a couple of freshmen and a couple of transfers. We had a successful season last year. I think we should be ready to play this year," said Jones, who guided the Hawks to a 20-8 record and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022.

Rockhurst returns four starters and senior libero Maureen Reilly, who was named the GLVC Libero of the Year. Reilly led the GLVC and ranked fifth in the nation in digs per set last season.

"We have an All-Conference player coming back on the right side (Tera Reberry) and we have two returning players on the left, and we have a transfer in Madison McClain in that mix as well. Our deepest position group is our middle where all four have an ability to play," Jones said.

Junior right side Tera Reberry, sophomore middle Sydney Raszler and sophomore outside Sarah Pyle combined for 694 kills in 2022. Reberry averaged 3.09 kills and 0.75 blocks per set. Razler and Pyle both averaged over two kills per set in their freshmen seasons.

Joining Pyle on the outside are sophomore Lexi Theis and McClain. Senior Logan Gronewold, sophomore Emaree Harris and freshman Ali Olson bring depth to the middle. The right side will be supported by senior Sydney McDonald, freshman redshirt Alyssa McDonald and sophomore transfer Taylor Roberts.

Senior Sarah Montague returns as the starting setter. She ranked fourth in the GLVC in assists per set last year. Freshman Molly Trachta and sophomore Carly Rolf will back up Montague. Sophomore Gracey Janes, senior Libby Kish and Rolf aid depth as defensive specialists.

The Hawks will be tested in the first two weeks of the season. Thirteenth-ranked Northwest Missouri State and Emporia State will be tough MIAA foes in the opening weekend. Rockhurst will face nationally-ranked Lynn, Nova Southeastern and Palm Beach Atlantic in south Florida on Sept. 8-9.

"Our goals are lofty. We talk about taking the next step. We made the championship game of the GLVC Tournament last year. This year we plan on winning the championship game in the conference tournament. We have made back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, but we haven't advanced. We have talked about advancing to the later rounds of the NCAA Tournament," added Jones.
