Men's Lacrosse returns six All-GLVC honorees

Alex Heflin was a first team All-GLVC midfielder last year.
Kevin Kelley begins his 10th season as the men's lacrosse coach at Rockhurst with one goal in mind: capture the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship.

The Hawks, who host Colorado State-Pueblo in their season opener tonight, have come up short at bringing home the GLVC trophy since joining in the GLVC in 2019.

"We will have a pretty good offense, though we have a lot of new faces. I think we have a chance at being a deeper team this year," said Kelley, who has led the Hawks to 78 wins in their first nine seasons as a program.

Rockhurst returns six all-conference honorees in senior midfielder Alec Heflin, senior defender Luke Goetz, senior defender Matt Buckley, junior midfielder Matt Campion, junior long-stick midfielder Luke Leonard and senior goalie Hayden Harris.

Heflin, Goetz, Campion and Harris earned preseason All-American honors from Inside Lacrosse. Heflin scored 38 points on 30 goals and eight assists last year. Harris posted a 10.35 goals against average with 177 saves in 2021.

Jack Vande Ven, Ricky Bloom, Jake Fisher and Grant Brunsvold combined for 58 goals last year. Alex Weis and Preston Borchardt are key transfers from Lindenwood who will help the team offensively.

"We return our entire defense, which will be a big strength for us. Hayden Harris is a phenomenal goalie. Matt Buckley decided to come back and use his last year of eligibility. Luke Goetz is one of the top on-ball defenders in Division II. I think we'll take a big step with our faceoffs with Drew Altic and (freshman) Carson Bradshaw."

The Hawks are picked to finish in a tie for second with Lewis in the GLVC Coaches' Preseason Poll behind Indianapolis. Rockhurst will host Lewis and Indianapolis on back-to-back weekends in April.

"Indianapolis, Lewis and Maryville are the big games we have circled on our schedule. We have some good out-of-conference games early in the season. We are excited going into our first game," added Kelley.
