Hawks open 2022 season hosting the RU Invitational

Junior libero Maureen Reilly led the Hawks with 594 digs last year.
The Rockhurst volleyball team heads into the season-opening Rockhurst Invitational this weekend with a strong group of returnees and seven freshmen. The Hawks graduated two all-conference attackers and one of their starting setters.

"We are young and somewhat inexperienced. Our young kids will have to step up and play. Hopefully we can put it together heading into conference play," said head coach Trent Jones, who is going into his third season at Rockhurst.

The Hawks return three starters and junior libero Maureen Reilly. Junior hitters Tera Reberry, Kenzie Hines and Sydney McDonald combined for 538 kills in 2021. Reilly, an All-GLVC second teamer, collected 594 digs last season.

Joining Hines on the outside are freshmen Sarah Pyle and Lexi Theis. The middle hitters will be led by senior Gracie LaForge, junior Logan Gronewold and freshman Sydney Raszler. Junior Hannah Meyers and sophomore Hannah Graves add depth to the front line.

Junior Sarah Montague and senior Brynn Bonewell give the Hawks a pair of experienced setters. Freshman defensive specialist Gracey Janes adds depth to the back row.

The Hawks will be tested in their second match on Friday against 16th-ranked Hillsdale, which won the NCAA Midwest Regional last year. Rockhurst will also host No. 8 Central Missouri on Friday, Sept. 9.

"Our conference will be a little different after losing two schools (Southern Indiana and Lindenwood). We're now one playing as one big conference (13 schools) instead of two divisions. Lewis and UMSL (Missouri-St. Louis) will be very good," added Jones.
