Hawks head into new season with tons of experience

Head coach Kevin Kelley begins Year Nine on Saturday.
Head coach Kevin Kelley is optimistic about his team as Rockhurst enters its ninth season in men's lacrosse.

The Hawks, who host Quincy in their season opener on Saturday, are ranked 20th in the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and Inside Lacrosse Media Polls. Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Poll rank the Hawks at No. 18.

"Coming off an 8-5 year, where we lacked experience in 2021," Kelley said, "we feel the opposite in 2022; we're loaded with experience. We brought back five graduate students (Sam Lindahl, Blake Bellinger, Judge Greenberger, John Myran and Brady Noernberg). Those five, combined with our seniors, provide unprecedented leadership."

Rockhurst returns nine of its top 10 leading scorers from last year. Brooks Hanson, Ricky Bloom, Lindahl, Myran and Bellinger earned All-GLVC honors last year.

Other major contributors on offense will be Alec Heflin, Grant Brunsvold and Bryce Horstman.  Heflin scored 11 goals in only four games last year. Brunsvold was ineligible last year due to the GLVC transfer rule, while Horstman is a transfer from Lindenwood. Kelley expects the two newcomers to be among his top midfielders.

Defensively, the Hawks return six of their top seven starters from 2021. Hayden Harris is back in goal and Greenberger returns as the long stick midfielder. Defenders Matt Buckley and Luke Goetz, Noernberg in the midfield and Greenberger earned All-GLVC accolades last year. Matt Campion also returns as a starting midfielder.

"Christian Koburov was a starting short-stick defensive midfielder in 2020," Kelley added. "He returns from missing all of 2021 with a torn ACL and he should be a major contributor. Luke Goetz may be the best defenseman in the conference."

The Hawks are picked second behind Indianapolis in the GLVC Coaches' Preseason Poll. Rockhurst will face the Greyhounds on April 9 in Indianapolis.
