Women drop GLVC opener to Maryville

Maryville held off Rockhurst down the stretch to post an 84-76 victory in the Hawks' conference opener Monday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Saints jumped out to a 35-25 halftime lead behind 53.3 percent shooting. The Hawks were outscored 29-21 in the second quarter.

Rockhurst went on an 11-0 run to take a 50-49 lead at the 4:30 mark in the third quarter. Freshman Macie Conway capped the run with a three-point play. The Saints used a 10-2 run to take a 67-60 lead early in the fourth quarter and ended the game on a 10-5 run.

Freshman Ali Kamies led the Hawks with 20 points on eight-of-12 shooting. She was a perfect four-of-four on 3-pointers. Conway tallied 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Keegan Sullivan collected 16 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Rockhurst scored 24 points in the paint while shooting 45.8 percent from the field (27-of-59). The Hawks made 16-of-22 free throws (72.7 percent).

Maryville (4-2, 2-0 GLVC) made 28-of-54 field goals (51.9 percent). Antoinette Mussorici led the Saints with 21 points and six assists.

The Hawks (3-4, 0-1 GLVC) play at McKendree Thursday night.
