First quarter run carries Bearcats past Hawks

McKendree scored 13 unanswered points in the first quarter to pull away for a 72-62 victory over Rockhurst Thursday at McKendree's Harry M. Statham Sports Center.
 
The Bearcats jumped out to a 23-12 lead after the first quarter as McKendree connected on eight of its first 20 field goals. The Hawks closed the gap in the second quarter after going on an 8-0 run but headed into halftime down 36-29.  

McKendree only outscored the Hawks by three points in the second half, but the late defensive rally was not enough to stop the Bearcats' offense.

Junior guard Keegan Sullivan led the Hawks with 16 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and one block. Macie Conway posted 13 points in 30 minutes of play. Freshman Clare Diener posted a career-high nine points on four-of-10 shooting.
 
Rockhurst shot 31.6 percent from the field and 71.4 percent on free throws. McKendree (4-4, 2-1 GLVC) scored 16 second-chance points and hit 50 percent from 3-point range.
 
The Hawks (3-5, 0-2 GLVC) play at Indianapolis on Saturday at 12 p.m. (Central time).
