The Rockhurst women's basketball team opened the weekend with an 83-75 loss to Pittsburg State in the Washburn Classic Friday in Topeka, Kansas.
Pitt State gained separation in the second quarter with an 8-0 run and closed the quarter with another 6-0 run. A slow start for Rockhurst in the third quarter made the score 61-48 going into the fourth quarter. The Hawks outscored the Gorillas, 27-22, in the final 10 minutes, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
Junior Keegan Sullivan led the Hawks with 24 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Freshman Macie Conway collected 16 points on six-of-12 shooting. Freshman Ali Kamies finished with 14 points and five assists. Molly Hummel tallied with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Rockhurst scored 26 points in the paint while shooting 38.9 percent from the field (28-of-72). The Hawks scored 15 points off turnovers.
Pittsburg State, 3-0, made 31-of-63 field goals (49.2 percent). Tristan Gegg led the Gorillas with 23 points.
The Hawks, 1-3, will face Washburn on Saturday at 3 p.m.
