The Rockhurst Hawks host Upper Iowa in their home opener Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and then travel to Topeka, Kansas, this weekend to play two games in the Washburn Classic. The Hawks will meet Pittsburg State at 4 p.m. Friday and then face Washburn on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Rockhurst opened the season with an 80-71 loss against Walsh last Friday, but bounced back on Saturday to defeat Parkside 79-74 in the Nexus Classic. Keegan Sullivan led the Hawks with 36 points and 16 rebounds on the weekend. Sullivan was named to the Nexus Classic All-Tournament Team. Molly Hummel added 22 points and six steals in the two games.
Upper Iowa (2-0) is coming off an 86-74 victory over Southern Arkansas Friday night. Junior guard Lydia Haack is averaging a team-high 26.5 points per game.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two teams since 2007. The Hawks have won three of the previous four meetings, including posting a 78-64 win last year at Upper Iowa.
The first matchup of the Washburn Classic will be against Pittsburg State (2-0). The Hawks have not seen the Gorillas since 2014, when Rockhurst won 72-62.
The Hawks will play Washburn (1-1) on Saturday to end the weekend. The Ichabods and Hawks have split their last four meetings. The most recent meeting was in 2021 when Rockhurst's Daly Sullivan hit a game-winning 3-pointer with four seconds left to win 71-69.
