Hawks will mix youth with veterans heading into new season

The Hawks were picked fifth in the GLVC Preseason Coaches’ Poll,
The Rockhurst women's soccer team will open the 2021 season with a solid group of veterans and a large group of newcomers.
 
Head coach Greg Herdlick returns five seniors who have helped the Hawks win 32 games over the past three seasons. Herdlick will count on eight to 10 freshmen for key playing time.
 
"After graduating several key seniors last year and a couple of starters suffering injuries that will sideline them this year, the team has a lot of youth heading into this campaign," said Herdlick, who is going into his 23rd season as the Hawks' head coach.
 
Rockhurst will look for leadership from senior defender Caroline Romme to bolster the team's defensive core. Senior midfielders Elle Guttmann and Hannah Byrne will help provide offense, while junior midfielder Olivia Van Belle will be asked to control the midfield.

Guttmann and Byrne have combined for nine goals and 16 assists since 2018. Romme has started three seasons on defense. Van Belle has played in 33 games over the past two seasons.

Goalkeeper Megan Meyers and defender Alex Moss also return for their senior seasons. Juniors Mallory Mumby, Carter Holton, Sydney Baker, Kate Schoen and Kaylee Freihaut add experienced depth to the roster.
 
"The youth of our team will be a strong factor in how the team fares this season," Herdlick said. "Several will be counted on to play a lot of minutes this season so gaining experience early will be crucial leading up to conference play. Whether starting or not, this freshmen class is very deep and talented, and will garner a lot of action throughout the year."
 
The Hawks, who were picked fifth in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll, open the season on Friday against Emporia State in St. Joseph, Missouri.
