Hawks complete sweep with late comeback

Tyler Stamer hit a two-run walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Rockhurst an 8-7 victory over Upper Iowa, capping a doubleheader sweep Saturday at RU's Loyola Park.

Stamer's hit to deep right field capped a four-run rally with two outs in the seventh. Tyler Herrenbruck begin the rally with a leadoff double. After the next two hitters were retired, Nic Mertes and Connor Ellefson posted RBI singles to cut the Peacocks' lead to 7-6..

Stamer led the Hawks with three hits and three RBIs. The senior right fielder tied the score at 4-4 with a single in the fourth. Ethan Kleinheider added two hits to the 13-hit attack.

The Hawks jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first behind run-scoring singles from Nathan Mark, Garrett McNally and Hoyt Bennett.

CJ July came out of the bullpen to get the win, pitching two hitless innings. Starter Thomas Jones allowed five runs on six hits over four innings.

A four-run third inning led Rockhurst to a 5-4 victory in the first game. Joe Specht paced the eight-hit offense with a pair of RBI doubles.

Specht doubled to right in the third to give the Hawks a 4-2 lead. He added a run-scoring double to center in the fifth to put Rockhurst in front 5-3.

Herrenbruck and Mark also collected two hits. Herrenbruck cleared the left-field fence for his first home run in the third. Tommy Kraus added an RBI triple in the third.

Michael Hellman (1-0) allowed three runs on four hits over 4.1 innings. Luke Lancaster picked up the save.

The Hawks (2-1) close out the four-game series with Upper Iowa on Sunday.
