Hawks blank Sioux Falls in season opener

The Rockhurst Hawks opened the 2021 softball season with a 3-0 victory over Sioux Falls in the Washburn Invitational Friday in Topeka, Kansas.

Lexie Storrer shut down Sioux Falls on two hits over six innings. The senior right-hander struck out eight and walked three. Paige Renner pitched a scoreless seventh inning to get the save.

Emily Clark opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning. Allison Shakiba led off the inning with a single and then stole second.

The Hawks added another run in the sixth inning on an RBI fielder's choice from Jaden Santoni. Shelby Winkelman and Jose Lindemann set up the tally with back-to-back singles.

Clark was a perfect three-for-three at the plate. Winkelman added a pair of hits to the eight-hit attack.

The Hawks fell to Emporia State, 5-0, in their second game on Friday. The Hornets scored three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Clark posted three of the Hawks' four hits. Olivia Prather (0-1) allowed three unearned runs on five hits over 3.2 innings.

Rockhurst
(1-1) is back in action on Saturday in Topeka against Wayne State (Neb.) and Minnesota Crookston.
