Free throws lift Prairie Stars past Hawks

A near perfect night on the free-throw line led Illinois Springfield to a 61-56 victory over Rockhurst Thursday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Prairie Stars made their first 23 free throws and finished 26-of-27 at the foul line to hold off the Hawks down the stretch.

Rockhurst jumped out to a 27-17 lead in the second quarter. Springfield ended the first half on a 12-2 run to tie the score at 29-all at halftime.

The Hawks led by six on two occasions in the third quarter before going into the fourth quarter trailing 42-41. The Prairie Stars took a 56-49 lead with 2:39 left and made five free throws in the final 41 seconds.

Monika Faerber led the Hawks with 19 points on seven-of-12 shooting. The junior forward also posted six rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Daly Sullivan collected 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Ella Wedergren tallied seven points and three assists. Lani Thompson and Keegan Sullivan combined for eight steals and seven rebounds.

The Hawks scored 28 points in the paint while shooting 31.7 percent from the field (20 of 63).

Springfield, 9-9, made 16-of-43 field goals (37.2 percent). Lauren Ladowski led the Prairie Stars with 22 points, while making 12-of-13 free throws.

The loss drops the Hawks to 11th place in the GLVC Points Rating System with a 7-10 record. Rockhurst will host Quincy in their final home game on Saturday.
