Hawks resume conference play against Miners

Nick Volz is closing in on 1,000 career points.
Conference play resumes for the Rockhurst men's basketball team this weekend. The Hawks face Missouri S&T at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mason-Halpin Field House.

Rockhurst defeated the Miners twice last season to move its winning streak to eight in a row over S&T. The Hawks hold a 26-12 lead in the all-time series.

The Hawks (5-7, 0-2 GLVC) are riding a three-game winning streak dating back to Dec. 9. Coach Drew Diener hopes the addition of three players to the lineup will give the Hawks a boost heading into January.

Sophomore guard Jake Auer leads the Hawks in scoring (15.8 pg, ninth in the GLVC) and leads the conference in 3-point field goals made (3.75 pg). Senior forward Nick Volz ranks 12th in scoring (14.4 pg), seventh in rebounding (7.2 pg) and 10th in assists (3.4 pg) in the GLVC. Volz is six points shy of 1,000 career points.

Missouri S&T (5-5, 1-2 GLVC) is coming off a 76-66 win at home over Culver Stockton on Dec. 20. Freshman guard Julien Smith leads the Miners with a 19.6 scoring average. Freshman guard Kaden Froebe is averaging 11.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

The Hawks meet William Jewell (5-5, 1-1 GLVC) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Liberty, Missouri. Junior guard Kobe McKinley lead the Cardinals with a 13.9 scoring average.

Rockhurst split its two meetings with Jewell last season. The Cardinals lead the series, 18-12, since the 2001-02 season.

Both games will be streaming on glvcsn.com with live stats available on rockhursthawks.com.
