Hawks fall in five sets in NCAA tourney opener

Rockhurst rallied to force a fifth set before falling to top-seeded Ferris State, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional (24-26, 25-21, 25-14, 18-25, 15-10) Thursday night in Big Rapids, Michigan.

The Hawks end their season with a 20-12 record. No. 23 Ferris State (26-4) will face Missouri-St. Louis in the regional semifinals Friday night.

"We fought our tails off. We came in and surprised them a little bit and took the momentum," said Rockhurst coach Trent Jones. "We battled with a really good team. When you get to a set five, anything can happen. I'm proud of the way my team fought."

Ferris State jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the fifth set. The Hawks pulled within four points before the Bulldogs ended the match with a kill.

Averi Vomastic led the Hawks with 14 kills and six digs. Tera Reberry posted 13 kills and three blocks. Sydney McDonald tallied 12 kills and three blocks. Justice Wingate added 10 kills and six blocks.

Maureen Reilly finished with a team-high 19 digs and three service aces. Kenzie Hines collected 16 digs and seven kills. Gabbie Inman had 39 assists and 11 digs. Sarah Montague added 14 assists and nine digs.
