First-half run carries Hawks past Concordia

Rockhurst jumped out to a 25-point halftime lead on the way to posting an 87-70 victory over Concordia University Saturday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Hawks went on a 26-2 run to take a 39-15 lead with 5:19 left in the first half. Rockhurst took a 54-29 lead into halftime behind 71-percent shooting.

"We really clicked offensively in the first half. We made shots and shared it well," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "They have a really nice team. We knew we needed to play well in order to beat those guys."

Nick Volz led Rockhurst with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The senior forward connected on nine-of-12 field goals.

Jake Auer tallied 15 points on six-of-11 shooting. Jake Buchanan scored a career-high 14 points while hitting four 3-pointers. Mikal Gjerde collected 13 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Rich Byhre and Spencer Moes combined for 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists.

"We will count on a lot of different lineups this year. It was great to get a win. Our guys have maintained a winning mindset despite our struggles," added Diener.
