Women tip off season with reason for optimism

Senior guard Daly Sullivan led the Hawks in scoring last season.
The Rockhurst women's basketball team will open the 2021-22 season Friday night at Upper Iowa with Coach Larry Park's most experienced squad. The Hawks return 11 players, including four starters off last year's team.

Leading the way off last year's team are senior guard Daly Sullivan and sophomore wing player Keegan Sullivan. The sister tandem combined for 474 points, 128 rebounds and 49 steals last season.

Daly scored a team-high 14.8 points per game and led the team with 44 three-point field goals made. Keegan averaged 11.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while playing most of the season off the bench.

Coach Park will start the Sullivan sisters in the backcourt along with sophomore Ella Wedergren. Meghan Urbanski, Allison McFarren, Hailey Dolphin and Lauren Garrison give the Hawks plenty of experience at the guard spot.

The Hawks will begin the season with Molly Hummel and Reagan Dodd as the frontline starters. They have combined for 31 starts over the past two seasons.

Lani Thompson, Haley Wiskur, Lindsey Ingwerson, Rebeca Garcia and Addison Bent give the Hawks added options in the frontcourt.

"We will be strong inside this year. We are stronger and more experienced," Park said. "Top to bottom, this is the best group that we've ever had. We are longer and pretty athletic. A lot of those kids played last year.

"I think our chances are good that we can pull together and mesh this year. I like what we're doing and I love their attitude. They are a very competitive group. When you beat UMKC and the No. 1 team (Drury) in the country, we have a bullseye on us."

The Hawks will play a 20-game conference schedule this year. The GLVC coaches voted Rockhurst second behind Drury in the GLVC West Division Preseason Poll.

"Our league is really good and if you're not ready anybody can get you," added Park. "Other teams recognize that we have some ability. For a very young group last year, we showed that we could be pretty good."
