Defense carries Hawks to 67-57 victory over Saints

A balanced scoring attack and tenacious defensive effort led Rockhurst to a 67-57 victory over Maryville Saturday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Hawks, 6-6, received 32 points from their bench and held the Saints to 36.4 percent shooting.

"I loved how hard we defended and the passion that we are playing with on that end," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "They (Maryville) have some very talented individual players. Our help was active and alert. We have guys off the bench giving us really good minutes."

Rockhurst went on a 10-0 run late in the first half to take a 29-25 lead with 3:23 left before halftime. The Hawks took their biggest lead of the game at 48-32 on a Jake Buchanan 3-pointer with 14:33 left to play.

A 22-11 run by Maryville cut RU's lead to five, 59-54, at the 3:31 mark. Chris Hamil and Thomas Faber hit back-to-back threes to give the Hawks a 65-54 lead.

Hamil led the Hawks with 14 points on five-of-nine shooting. Curtis Lewis posted 12 points and two steals. Buchanan scored 10 points off the bench.

Nick Volz finished with nine points and four rebounds. Quinton Curry added six points, seven rebounds and three assists.

The Hawks shot 53.1 percent from the field (26 of 49). Rockhurst outscored Jewell, 32-12, in bench points.

Owen Long and Daniel Farris led Maryville, 5-7, with 14 points apiece. The Saints were held to 32.3 percent shooting in the second half.

The Hawks travel to Lindenwood on Thursday.
