Hawks open season with 8-5 loss to Washburn

The Rockhurst Hawks opened the 2020 baseball season with an 8-5 loss to Washburn in the Ranger Roundup in Alva, Oklahoma.

Rockhurst rallied in the final three innings to score three runs and put the tying run on base in the ninth inning. The Hawks finished with 12 hits and four stolen bases.

The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Connor Ellefson and a steal of home plate by Jack Burns.

Washburn scored six runs in the fifth and six innings to take an 8-2 lead. Nic Mertes hit a two-run single in the seventh and Tommy Kraus added a run-scoring single in the ninth.

Mertes, Ellefson, Garrett McNally and Joe Specht each collected two hits. Michael Hellman allowed four runs on five hits with two strikeouts over four innings.

The Hawks (0-1) face Northwestern Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon.
