Hawks' offense shines in doubleheader sweep

The Rockhurst Hawks enjoyed a big day offensively, sweeping the Newman Jets by scores of 7-2 and 10-2 Saturday in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Hawks opened up a 5-0 lead early in game one. Payton Staggs scored the game's first run, coming home on an Allison Shakiba double. Calli Wibbenmeyer drove in Shakiba to cap a two-run first inning. Rockhurst continued to apply pressure in the second, as Staggs drove in Shelby Winkelman, and then Wibbenmeyer brought in Katie Wood and Shakiba with a 2-RBI single.

The Hawks would add a pair of insurance runs in the fourth inning on solo homers from Staggs and Emily Clark.

Reigning GLVC Pitcher of the Week Lexie Storrer was sharp again on Saturday, throwing a complete game and limiting the Jets to two runs.

Shakiba finished game one with three hits. Wibbenmeyer led the way in RBIs with three.

Game two was much of the same for Rockhurst, as the Hawks scored six in the first two innings, highlighted by a Lauren Marks two-run blast in the second.

Emily Clark's second homer of the day extended the Hawks' lead to 8-1 in the fourth inning. Maya Gallagher doubled home a pair in the fifth to give Rockhurst a run rule walk-off win.

Senior pitcher Olivia Prather had the ball in game two and held the Jets to just three hits.

Gallagher racked up three hits and four RBIs in game two, while Clark drove in three.

"We came out prepared and ready to play," Coach Bailey Wittenauer said. "Our bats were alive, and defensively we backed up our pitching."

The Hawks are back in action next weekend, traveling to Topeka, KS for the Washburn Invitational.
