Hawks rally past Fort Hays in extra innings

The Rockhurst Hawks opened the Washburn Invitational with a 3-2 walk-off win over Fort Hays State Friday in Topeka, Kansas.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Maya Gallagher gave the Hawks new life with a game-tying homer over the left-field wall.

After Olivia Prather worked out of a jam in the top of the eighth to keep the game tied, Payton Staggs walked it off in the bottom half, doubling home Jaden Santoni to deliver the 3-2 victory.

Prather was sharp in the pitcher's circle, going all eight innings, allowing just two runs and striking out eight.

Emily Clark got the Hawks on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI double, plating Allison Shakiba, who collected two of the Hawks' six hits in game one.

Rockhurst dropped its second game of the day vs. Washburn by a score of 5-4. Clark drove in two on a home run in the top of the first. Clark, Calli Wibbenmeyer and Lauren Marks each collected two hits in the second game.

The Hawks (6-2) are back at it Saturday, taking on Central Missouri (10:30 a.m.) and Emporia State (2:30 p.m.).
