Hawks' pitching shines in wins over Kentucky Wesleyan, Tiffin

The Rockhurst Hawks notched two wins Sunday -- 7-2 over Kentucky Wesleyan and 5-0 over Tiffin -- backed by strong pitching performances from Olivia Prather and Lexie Storrer.

Prather had the ball in game one vs. KWC and allowed just one earned run in 6.1 innings. The senior from Liberty, Missouri pitched to contact and let her infielders go to work, inducing 12 groundouts.

The Hawks got on the board early, posting three runs in the top of the first inning. Payton Staggs scored on an RBI single from Maya Gallagher, then Lauren Marks plated two more on a double to center field, scoring Gallagher and Calli Wibbenmeyer.

Gallagher wasn't done yet, racking up two more RBIs in the fifth inning when her single to left field brought home Staggs and Emily Clark. The Hawks stretched the lead to 6-0 in the fifth when Wibbenmeyer scored on a passed ball.

Staggs provided more insurance in the seventh inning with a solo home run, the Hawks' first big fly of the season. Wesleyan would get on the board in the bottom half of the inning, but Paige Renner came on to record the final two outs and seal the 7-2 win.

Storrer was in the pitcher's circle for game two vs. Tiffin and dominated the Dragons, throwing a complete game shutout, striking out 12 and allowing just two hits.

The Hawks offense capitalized on a Tiffin error in the third inning as Clark and Staggs came around to score, giving Rockhurst a 2-0 lead. Josie Lindemann doubled the Hawks' lead in the fourth inning when an RBI single plated Marks and Shelby Winkelman.

Katie Wood extended the lead to five with a solo homer in the sixth. Storrer continued to cruise, giving Rockhurst its third win of the weekend.

The Hawks (3-1) return home to take on Newman next Saturday.
