Sullivan leads Hawks to 67-64 win over Kansas City

Daly Sullivan scored a game-high 19 points, highlighted by a late three-pointer, to lead Rockhurst to a 67-64 victory over the Kansas City Roos Sunday at the Swinney Recreation Center on the KC campus.

Sullivan's game-winning three from the left corner gave the Hawks with a 65-62 left with 1:09 left to play. The senior guard added a free throw with seven seconds to put Rockhurst in front by three.

The game ended with Kansas City missing two free throws with one second left. The game counts on the  Roos' record (1-2), but was an exhibition game for the Hawks, who also beat the Roos in 2014 and 2015.

"Our defensive effort was outstanding. We were scrappy as heck," said Rockhurst coach Larry Park. "Our kids wanted this one. Daly Sullivan once again made some big plays. That three she hit (at the 1:09 mark) was humongous."

Kansas City was held to 31.8 percent shooting (21 of 66) from the field. The Roos shot 24.0 percent (12 of 50) in the first three quarters.

The Hawks led 33-30 at halftime and outscored Kansas City 22-12 in the third quarter to take a 55-42 lead into the final period. The Roos, trailing 59-46 with seven minutes left, went on a 12-0 run to pull within one point with 2:37 left.

Kansas City's Sanaa' St. Andre made a layup to tie the score at 60-60 at the 1:43 mark. A layup by Sullivan put the Hawks back in front, 62-60, with 1:34 left. The Roos' Jonaie Johnson tied it again nine shots later.

Jessina Rada scored 11 points on four-of-seven shooting. Molly Hummel finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Haley Wiskur added seven points. Lani Thompson and Sullivan posted seven and six rebounds, respectively.

Rockhurst shot 45.5 percent from the field (25 of 55) and 65.0 percent from the foul line (13 of 20). The Hawks outrebounded the Roos, 41-38.

"We are emotionally and mentally drained," added Park. "We have a chance to be pretty good."

The Hawks (3-1) return home to host Drury on Saturday at 1 p.m.
