Cross-town rivalry returns to Rockhurst

Sophomore forward Lani Thompson scored eight points in win at McKendree.
The Rockhurst women's basketball team will meet cross-town rival William Jewell in their home opener Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Rockhurst (1-1) is coming off a hard-earned 70-61 win at McKendree on Sunday. The Sullivan sisters, Daly and Keegan, combined for 29 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Daly Sullivan leads the Hawks in scoring (13.5 ppg, 21st in the GLVC). Junior forward Monika Faerber is the team leader in rebounding (10.0 pg, seventh in the GLVC). Keegan Sullivan is averaging 13.0 points and 5.0 rebound per game.

Jewell (1-1) won its season opener at Indianapolis, 63-58, before falling at Southern Indiana, 80-55, on Sunday. Senior forward Kiara Bradley leads the team with a 25.5 scoring average.

The Cardinals won their most recent meeting, 75-66, last January at Rockhurst. Jewell holds an 12-6 record over the Hawks since joining the GLVC in 2011-12.

Rockhurst goes back on the road Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Missouri S&T. The Miners (0-1) fell at Maryville, 83-71, on Sunday. Junior center Alex Kerr led S&T with 22 points.

The Hawks posted an 85-70 win over the Miners in Rolla last January. Rockhurst has won eight of the last 11 meetings with S&T. The Miners lead the all-time series, 22-10.
