Hawks drop season opener at Southern Indiana

Southern Indiana never trailed in pulling away late for a 70-55 victory over Rockhurst in a season-opening conference game Friday in Evansville, Indiana.

The Eagles jumped out to a 22-12 lead after the first quarter. The Hawks went on a 13-3 run in the second quarter to cut USI's lead to 30-25.

Sophomore guard Jessina Rada connected on her second 3-point field goal midway into the third period to reduce RU's deficit to five points (45-40).

The Hawks outscored USI 15-13 in the third quarter to reduce USI's lead to 54-47 after 30 minutes.

Rockhurst struggled early in the fourth quarter as the Eagles went on an 11-2 run to take a 65-49 lead with 5:24 left in the game.

Daly Sullivan scored six of her team-high 13 points in RU's second-quarter run. The senior guard also finished with three steals.

Freshman guard Keegan Sullivan posted 11 points (eight in the second half) and five rebounds. Rada finished with a career-high 10 points.

Junior forward Monika Faerber collected a game-high 13 rebounds, in addition to scoring eight points. Freshman guard Ella Wedergren added six rebounds and three assists.

Rockhurst shot 26.1 percent from the field (18 of 69) and 61.5 percent on free throws (16 of 26).

The Eagles connected on 33.9 percent of its field goals (19 of 56). Emma DeHart led USI with a game-high 23 points.

The Hawks (0-1) face McKendree on Sunday (1 p.m.) in Lebanon, Illinois.
