Hawks travel to Southern Indiana for season opener

Senior guard Daly Sullivan is the leading returning scorer for the Hawks.

The Rockhurst Hawks open the 2020-21 season on the road Friday afternoon in Indiana. Southern Indiana will host the Hawks at 1 p.m. Friday in Evansville, Indiana.

Head coach Larry Park enters his 12th season at Rockhurst with eight returning players and six newcomers. The Hawks will have to replace their top two scorers from last year.

Senior Daly Sullivan is the leading returning scorer. Sullivan averaged just under nine points a game as a shooting guard while playing 22 minutes per game. Rockhurst's front line will be led by sophomores Molly Hummel and Lani Thompson, and junior-college transfer Monika Faerber.

Southern Indiana returns seven players and three starters from a team that went 18-9 overall (14-6 in the GLVC) and qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Senior guard Emma DeHart and sophomore forward Hannah Haithcock are the top returnees for the Eagles. DeHart averaged 11.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game last year. Haithcock averaged 11.0 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest in 2019-20.

The Eagles lead the all-time series, 15-4, after defeating the Hawks 81-72 last year in Kansas City.

Rockhurst will close out the two-game road trip at 1 p.m. Sunday at McKendree. The Bearcats posted a 74-48 win at Rockhurst last year. The Hawks hold a 9-2 lead in the all-time series.

McKendree landed in the No. 4 spot in the GLVC East Division Preseason Poll. The Bearcats went 12-16 overall and 5-15 in the GLVC in 2019-20 season.

The Bearcats return seven players and two starters in junior guard Jenna Krause and senior guard Kallie Pohlman.
