Hawks have lofty goals heading into 2020 season

Senior midfielder Zach Bodeau was the GLVC Specialty Player of the Year in 2019.
The Rockhurst men's lacrosse program opens their seventh season with lofty goals after falling short of the GLVC Championship by one goal last year.

Head coach Kevin Kelley returns most of his top players from 2019 and has added a strong freshman class. The Hawks are the pre-season favorite in the GLVC West Division and are ranked 13th in the preseason by the USILA.

"We all feel pretty good. We have a solid nucleus which I feel will benefit us the most. We return just about everybody from last year," said Kelley, whose Hawks open the season at Benedictine Saturday afternoon.

Kelley enters his seventh year at Rockhurst coming off a 12-4 record. The Hawks return four first team and three honorable mention All-GLVC honorees, including unanimous GLVC Specialty Player of the Year in senior midfielder Zach Bodeau.

The offense will be led by junior attacker Sam Lindahl, senior midfielder Drake O'Neill and senior attacker Kai Trujillo. Lindahl scored a team-high 48 goals and 84 points last year. O'Neill tallied 38 goals and 57 points. Trujillo posted 40 goals and 48 points.

Rockhurst will also feature one of the top faceoff units in the country with Bodeau and Sal Valdivia. The midfield will be led by O'Neill, John Myran, Blake Bellinger, Regan Devine and Oliver Byers. Connor Bateman and Blake Branscombe return on defense, along with Jake Bastien and Whit Tegenkamp.

Bodeau, Lindahl, O'Neill and Bateman were on the All-GLVC First Team last year. Valdivia, Branscombe and Bellinger received All-GLVC honorable mention honors. Bodeau, Lindahl and O'Neill are preseason All-Americans.

Senior Patrick Fitzsimmons will open the season as the starting goalie after splitting time in goal at the end of last year with Alex Pfeil. Senior Spencer Bright and freshman Boomer Kubik will also see time in goal. Kelley also expects to get valuable help from freshmen Alec Heflin, Luke Goetz, Jakob Setley and Christian Koburov.

"This is the deepest we've ever been," Kelley said. "We have a big roster with a lot of talented players. It creates great competition. We feel confident and have tremendous leadership. This team is hungry after losing three games by one goal last year. The kids are genuinely working hard because they don't want to fall short this year."
