Hawks fall at Truman State, 85-75

An efficient night offensively powered Truman State to an 85-75 victory over Rockhurst Thursday night in Kirksville, Missouri.

The Bulldogs converted on 35-of-60 field goals (58.3 percent) and attacked the basket, racking up 52 points in the paint.

Rockhurst held their own against a talented Truman team, who has only lost one conference game all season. The Hawks hung around, led by the play of Madeline Ronshausen (22 points), Maddy Grennes (16 points) and Paige Pendley (13 points). Grennes scored a career-high while shooting six-of-seven from the floor, including a perfect four-of-four from three-point range.

Truman scored the game's first seven points, but the Hawks settled in and answered with a 10-0 run, including a quick five from Ronshausen. The Bulldogs would take the lead into the second quarter, but Rockhurst jumped back in front, 33-32, after a Ronshausen triple at the 5:19 mark of the second quarter, capping a sequence where the senior from St. Louis scored 10 points in less than two minutes.

The Bulldogs led by three at halftime and maintained a one-possession lead through most of the third quarter as the Hawks continued to battle. Truman stretched the lead to eight early in the fourth, but the Hawks responded with a Grennes three-pointer and a Pendley layup to pull back within three at 68-65. That is as close as Rockhurst would get though as the Bulldogs continued to get high-percentage shots and closed out the game.

Lauren Krissman collected six points, five rebounds and two steals for the Hawks. Molly Hummel added four points and pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.

Rockhurst shot north of 50 percent inside the arc, 21-of-40, but struggled from the outside going seven-of-29 from three-point range. The Hawks, shooting 37.1 percent from three entering tonight, will look to shoot better from the outside Saturday at Quincy.
