Second-quarter run lifts USI Eagles over Hawks

Southern Indiana defeated Rockhurst 77-67 Thursday night at Mason-Halpin Field House, led by a 17-2 second quarter run.

The Hawks led 21-20 after one quarter, but the Screaming Eagles caught fire in the second, scoring 17 of the next 19 points to open up a 37-23 lead.

Trailing by 15 at the half, Rockhurst battled back in the third quarter, cutting the USI lead to seven after a pair of jumpers from Hailey Dolphin and a Madeline Ronshausen three-pointer. Ronshausen kept the Hawks in the game. The First Team All-GLVC performer finished with 26 points of nine-of-19 shooting from the floor and seven-of-13 from three.

USI was able to weather the storm and hang on for a 10-point victory, led by their veteran backcourt, Ashley Johnson (21 points) and Kiara Moses (12 points).

Junior guard Daly Sullivan had a strong game, tallying 14 points on six-of-12 shooting. Dolphin finished with eight points, while Paige Pendley and Reagan Dodd each chipped in five points. Dodd pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds, battling against a tough front line for the Eagles.

USI had advantages in points in the paint (44) and points off turnovers (24). Rockhurst continues to shoot well from the outside, connecting on 12 three-pointers, after a season-high 14 in Monday's win.

The Hawks (8-6, 2-4 GLVC) return to action at Mason-Halpin Saturday, as the McKendree Bearcats come to town (1:00 p.m. start).
