Strong freshmen class will give Hawks a deeper team in 2019

Depth should not be a problem for the Rockhurst women's soccer team in 2019. Coach Greg Herdlick has added a strong freshman class to an experienced team featuring nine returning starters from last year's squad which captured the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

"I think we have a pretty talented incoming freshman class," Herdlick said. "I look forward to integrating the newcomers with our existing team to hopefully improve our record from last season (11-8-2) and get off on the right foot. Our depth should be much stronger than it has been in the past."

The Hawks will be led offensively by senior forward Stephanie Ostrander, who scored 12 goals last year in earning GLVC Offensive Player of the Year honors. Sophomore midfielder McKenna Leetch was the GLVC Co-Freshman of the Year as she scored seven goals last year. Her twin sister, Jillian Leetch, also returns as a starting midfielder.

"With those two and with some of our other returning players and newcomers, we are hoping to distribute our scoring a little more evenly instead of relying on a couple of players," Herdlick said.

Rockhurst will be strong on defense behind the play of senior co-captains Cathy Rometti and Colleen Pikus. "They have had a very good preseason," Herdlick said. "They have created a really positive environment and I expect them to be the workhorses for this team."

The Hawks return both of their goalkeepers from last year. Senior Rosie Breheny will open the season as the starter. Sophomore Megan Meyers will see plenty of minutes in goal after starting eight games last year.

Eight or nine newcomers will make the travel team, according to Herdlick. Three freshmen have earned starting jobs. Greta Seal will replace an outgoing senior on defense. Olivia Van Belle and Kaylee Freihaut will start as center midfielders. Lauren Cousins will come off the bench to spell Ostrander on offense.

Herdlick believes the GLVC will be just as competitive as last year when four teams tied for first place in the regular season. "I expect it to be a grind each weekend and hopefully we can hold our own," he said.
