Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Hawks open season with 4-3 double overtime win over Emporia State

The Rockhurst women's soccer team had to play 15 extra minutes to win their season opener Friday in the Stoney Creek Hotel Classic in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Senior forward Stephanie Ostrander connected on a header from six yards out to give the Hawks a hard-earned 4-3 victory over Emporia State. Ostrander, who led the GLVC with 12 goals last year, scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick from Jillian Leetch halfway through the second overtime period.

Three players came off the bench to score Rockhurst's first three goals. Brittany Valieant tied the score at 1-1 in the 31st minute with an assist from Haley Schroeder. Mary Koeller came back less than a minute later to give the Hawks their first lead of the game. Valieant assisted on Koeller's goal.

After Emporia State tied the score in the 65th minute, freshman Sydney Baker found the nets off a pass from Valieant to put the Hawks back in front, 3-2. The Lady Hornets knotted the score again in the 82nd minute.

Rockhurst outshot Emporia State, 21-20. Ostrander led the Hawks with four shots. Koeller and Baker each posted three shots. Senior keeper Rosie Breheny finished with four saves. Defenders Cathy Rometti, Colleen Pikus and Greta Seal never took a break while each played 105 minutes.

The Hawks (1-0) will return to St. Joseph on Sunday to face the host Missouri Western Griffons (0-1) in a 3 p.m. matchup between GLVC and MIAA schools.
