Hawks open GLVC play with 4-1 win over Jewell

Jillian Leetch found the back of the net twice for Rockhurst -- her first goal in the sixth minute and second one in the 90th minute -- to bookend the scoring as the Hawks cruised to a 4-1 victory over William Jewell Sunday afternoon at Bourke Field.

Leetch scored in the opening minutes from six yards out, set up by nice passes from Elle Guttmann and Mary Koeller. The score remained 1-0 until early in the second half when Stephanie Ostrander capitalized on a rebound in front of the net and doubled the Hawks' lead.

Jewell would get on the board via penalty kick with just under 20 minutes remaining, cutting the lead to 2-1. The Hawks would answer three minutes later, as Cathy Rometti found Haley Schroeder on a free kick and Schroeder did the rest, scoring from six yards out.

A Leetch free kick laser from 25 yards out extended the lead to 4-1 in the final minute as the Hawks pulled away from Jewell.

Rockhurst outshot Jewell 22-8 (12-3 on goal). Leetch attempted five shots (three on goal), while Ostrander put four shots on frame. Rosie Breheny was strong in net for the Hawks, collecting two saves as the defense was stout all-around.

Coach Greg Herdlick's team improves to 3-0 with the win (1-0 GLVC). The Hawks host two more GLVC matches next weekend -- Friday vs. Truman State (5:00 p.m.) and Sunday vs. Quincy (12:00 p.m.).
