Hawks drop pair of one-run games to USI

The Rockhurst softball team competed with first place Southern Indiana, but fell just short in a pair of one-run losses -- 1-0 and 4-3 -- Saturday afternoon at Loyola Park.

Game one was a pitcher's duel as Shannon Greene went toe-to-toe with USI's All-American Jennifer Leonhardt. Greene retired the first 10 batters she faced, pounding the strike zone, pitching to contact and letting her defense go to work.

After five scoreless innings, USI broke through in the top of sixth. Olivia Prather came on in relief and stranded runners on second and third to keep the score 1-0.

The Hawks threatened in the sixth and seventh, but Leonhardt put out the fires, finishing the job in an impressive complete game shutout.

Emily Clark collected two hits in the game and Megan Freitag added a double.

The bats would come alive in game two as Rockhurst rallied to erase a 3-0 deficit. Four straight singles from Calli Wibbenmeyer, Payton Staggs, Sydney Wilde and Katie Wood helped the Hawks manufacture three runs in the bottom of the third to level the score.

USI regained the lead in the fifth inning, and that 4-3 lead would hold up the rest of the way.

Wilde finished the second game two-for-four with an RBI. Staggs and Wood drove in runs on their aforementioned singles.

The Hawks (18-15, 7-7 GLVC) travel to Wichita on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader vs. Newman. They resume conference play next Saturday, April 13 on the road vs. Indianapolis.
