Rockhurst homered four times in a doubleheader sweep of Newman Wednesday, powering past the Jets by scores of 5-4 and 6-4 in Wichita, Kansas.
Calli Wibbenmeyer went deep in game one, part of a four-RBI outing.
Lauren Marks homered in the second game.
Emily Clark cleared the fences twice in game two, including the game-winner in the seventh inning.
The Hawks trailed 2-0 in the fourth inning of game one, but Wibbenmeyer changed that with one swing of the bat when her shot to left center put the Hawks in front, 3-2. Rockhurst would extend the lead to three in the fifth inning as
Megan Freitag came around to score on an error, and then Wibbenmeyer plated Clark with an RBI single.
The Jets would threaten in the late innings, cutting the deficit to one at 5-4. But
Paige Renner stranded the tying run on second and collected the save.Â
Shannon Greene threw five solid innings (one earned run, six hits, one strikeout).
Wibbenmeyer powered the attack with her four RBIs.
Emily Truitt went two-for-four as well, as she continues her strong season.
Clark got Rockhurst on the board in game two, as her two-run homer put the Hawks up 2-1 in the third inning.
Lauren Marks extended the lead to two with a solo shot in the fourth. Newman surged ahead with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.
That margin remained until the top of the seventh when
Shelby Winkelman gave the Hawks' life with a lead-off triple. Winkelman would score the tying run moments later as Freitag put the ball in play and reached on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning with two outs, Clark made lightning strike for the second time, as her two-run homer to center field put the Hawks ahead, 6-4.
Greene (16-7) protected the lead in the bottom half, one of her three scoreless innings, to secure the sweep and her second win of the day.
Clark finished the game three-for-four with four RBIs, all coming on the two homers. Marks and
Hanna Stam each added two hits.
Coach
Bailey Wittenauer pointed to the Hawks' timely hits, saying, "We did a great job with clutch hitting when we had runners on base."
With the non-conference sweep, Rockhurst improves to 20-15 on the season. The Hawks hit the road for GLVC action this weekend, taking on Indianapolis Saturday (11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m central time) and Lewis Sunday (noon and 2:00 p.m. CT).
