Hawks open road trip with losses to UMSL

The Missouri-St. Louis Tritons swept Rockhurst by the scores of 6-5 and 7-5 Friday afternoon on the UMSL campus in St. Louis.

The Hawks opened up a 2-0 lead early in game one when Emily Clark doubled home Emily Truitt in the top of the first and Truitt singled home Megan Freitag in the second.

The Tritons responded with three runs in the bottom of the second, but the Hawks would even the score in the top of third as Clark scored when Katie Wood was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

UMSL added two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 lead. Rockhurst would get one back as Truitt scored on an RBI groundout from Clark in the sixth. The Hawks then manufactured another run in the seventh to level the score 5-5 as Freitag singled home Kiri Evans. But the Tritons would walk it off in the bottom half on a triple and error.

The Tritons carried that momentum into game two, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. The Hawks would come alive in the third, getting all four runs back. Lauren Marks plated two with a double as Clark and Hanna Stam came around to score. Shelby Winkelman delivered two more runs, singling home Marks and Payton Staggs.

The Tritons would add a run in the fourth inning and two in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. Rockhurst would get one back on a Clark solo homer in the seventh, but UMSL held on for the 7-5 win.

The Hawks will look to bounce back Saturday at Maryville (12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.)
