Hawks drop doubleheader to No. 16 Indianapolis

The 16th-ranked Indianapolis Greyhounds took two games from Rockhurst, 3-2 and 8-6, Saturday afternoon at Baumgartner Field in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Game one was a nine inning pitcher's duel as Rockhurst's Shannon Greene and Indy's Halie Waters each went the distance.

The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and then it was all zeroes until the fifth inning. Rockhurst went from down one to up one with a pair of solo homers from Shelby Winkelman and Emily Truitt. Indy would level the score in the bottom of the fifth, and that 2-2 tie held through eight innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, Indy manufactured the game-winning run as Sydnie Foster singled home Brooke Montgomery.

Outside of the fifth inning home runs, the Hawks were unable to break through offensively in game one. Payton Staggs collected a pair of singles.

The bats came alive for both teams in game two. Truitt led off the top of the first with a single and would be driven in by Emily Clark two batters later. Indy responded in the bottom of the first, surging ahead 4-1.

The Greyhounds stretched the lead to 7-1 in the third inning, but the Hawks weren't ready to pack it in and call it a day. Rockhurst would score in each of the last four frames to get within striking distance.

Staggs scored on a Katie Wood double in the fourth inning. Calli Wibbenmeyer drove in Hanna Stam in the fifth, followed by a Staggs solo shot to make the score 7-4.

The Hawks cut the deficit to two on a Wood homer in the sixth. Indy would answer in bottom half, pushing the lead to 8-5. Clark went deep over the fence in the seventh to pull Rockhurst back within two, but the Hawks couldn't quite get over of the hump.

Wood finished two-for-three with two RBIs. Staggs matched her game one total to finish the day with four hits.

Rockhurst (20-17, 7-9 GLVC) travels to Romeoville, Illinois Monday for a doubleheader against Lewis.
