Truitt grand slam powers Hawks past Cardinals

An Emily Truitt grand slam swung momentum in Rockhurst's favor, and the Hawks shut down a late William Jewell rally to hang on for an 8-7 win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Loyola Park.

The Cardinals threw the first punch, opening up a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Hawks scored the game's next eight runs with rallies in the third and fourth innings.

Megan Freitag got the Hawks on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. Truitt would score later in the inning on a Jewell fielding error. The loudest firework came in the fourth inning when Truitt went deep to right-center field, scoring Freitag, Shelby Winkelman and Katie Wood on the grand slam. The Hawks would capitalize on another Jewell error as Calli Wibbenmeyer scored to extend the lead to 8-4.

The Cardinals fought back in the sixth inning, plating three runs to trim the deficit to one. With two runners on and a chance for Jewell to take the lead, Freitag made a game-saving catch, running down a sharply hit ball to left center. The leaping grab helped pitcher Shannon Greene -- who settled in nicely after a tough first inning -- secure her 13th win of the season.

Truitt finished the game two-for-four with four RBIs and two runs scored. Emily Clark recorded a game-high three hits.

William Jewell took game two by a score of 4-2. With the split, Rockhurst stands at 17-12 (6-4 GLVC).

The Hawks travel to Northwest Missouri State Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader (1:00 and 3:00 p.m.). They return home for GLVC action Saturday vs. Southern Indiana and Sunday vs. Bellarmine (12:00 and 2:00 p.m. both days).
