Hawks edge Panthers in home opener

The Rockhurst Hawks held off Drury for a 3-2 victory in their home opener at Loyola Park Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks wasted no time getting on the board as Emily Clark doubled home Hanna Stam in the bottom of the first inning.

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the third, Calli Wibbenmeyer put the Hawks in front when a sharp grounder up the middle ricocheted off the pitcher, bringing in Stam and Emily Truitt.

The Hawks maintained that 3-1 advantage until the Panthers threatened in the top of the sixth. Drury cut the lead to one, but Shannon Greene worked out of a jam, and then retired the Panthers 1-2-3 in the seventh to secure the win.

Stam and Winbbenmeyer each collected two hits. Stam scored twice while Wibbenmeyer tallied two RBIs.

Greene went the distance, pitching seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts. With the win she improved to 12-4 on the year.

The Hawks dropped their second game of the day, by the same score of 3-2. Clark and Megan Freitag each added two hits, but the Hawks' seventh inning comeback fell just short.

Rockhurst (15-10, 4-2 GLVC) is back in action Saturday vs. Missouri S&T (10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. starts).
