The Rockhurst men's lacrosse team won their home opener in style, defeating Adams State, 28-6, Sunday afternoon at Bourke Field.
The Hawks rattled off 16 unanswered goals, a dominant stretch that saw an 8-2 lead early in the second quarter soar to a 24-2 advantage midway through the third quarter.
It was a balanced scoring day for the Hawks as four players tied for the game-high in goals with three:
Drake O'Neill,
Kai Trujillo,
Sam Lindahl and
Nick Schveninger.
Five Hawks added two goals apiece:
Collin Fischer,
Blake Bellinger,
Sal Valdivia,
Jason Zabel and
Regan Devine.
Valdivia and
Zach Bodeau combined to win 32-of-37 faceoffs. Valdivia tallied a game-high 13 ground balls, while Bodeau talled in 11 ground balls.
As the lead increased, Coach
Kevin Kelley used a goalie-by-committee approach as four Hawks saw time in net:
Alex Pfeil,
Hayden Harris,
Spencer Bright and
Patrick Fitzsimmons. Harris collected a team-high three saves, while the other three keepers each had one save.
Rockhurst outshot Adams State, 63-22, and had a sizable advantage in ground balls, 44-11.
The Hawks improve to 6-2 (2-0 GLVC) with the win, and are back in action this Friday, March 22 at Bourke Field vs. Alabama Huntsville (6:00 p.m.).
