Hawks' offense shines in home opener

The Rockhurst men's lacrosse team won their home opener in style, defeating Adams State, 28-6, Sunday afternoon at Bourke Field.

The Hawks rattled off 16 unanswered goals, a dominant stretch that saw an 8-2 lead early in the second quarter soar to a 24-2 advantage midway through the third quarter.

It was a balanced scoring day for the Hawks as four players tied for the game-high in goals with three: Drake O'Neill, Kai Trujillo, Sam Lindahl and Nick Schveninger.

Five Hawks added two goals apiece: Collin Fischer, Blake Bellinger, Sal Valdivia, Jason Zabel and Regan Devine.

Valdivia and Zach Bodeau combined to win 32-of-37 faceoffs. Valdivia tallied a game-high 13 ground balls, while Bodeau talled in 11 ground balls.

As the lead increased, Coach Kevin Kelley used a goalie-by-committee approach as four Hawks saw time in net: Alex Pfeil, Hayden Harris, Spencer Bright and Patrick Fitzsimmons. Harris collected a team-high three saves, while the other three keepers each had one save.

Rockhurst outshot Adams State, 63-22, and had a sizable advantage in ground balls, 44-11.

The Hawks improve to 6-2 (2-0 GLVC) with the win, and are back in action this Friday, March 22 at Bourke Field vs. Alabama Huntsville (6:00 p.m.).
